Toshiba HD-XA2 1080p HD-DVD Player

Product Description

Although many DVD discs on the market offer widescreen display, they are not necessarily high-definition. If you want to get optimal video results from DVD on your HDTV set, HD-DVD is the format that's set to deliver resolutions up to 1080p for top visuals. High Definition video requires a tremendous amount of space on a disc, thus a new Blue laser (versus a Red Laser for DVD) is utilized for HD DVD. The blue laser, with its shorter wave length, allows for information to be stored more densely on the disc, thus improving storage capacity by about over 3 times compared to that of a red laser technology. Additionally, more accurate and efficient video compression like MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1. (based on Microsoft Windows Media) compress information to achieve file sizes that are less than half of those of the current standard DVD's MPEG2. Enjoy backwards compatibility and play your collection of standard DVDs on the player. In addition, via the HDMI interface, the HD-XA2 scales the standard definition DVD output to a resolution of 720p, 1080i or 1080p to match your HDTV's performance. Not only does this output the video in HD standard resolution, but because the conversion takes place in the player, the signal remains free from excessive digital-to-analog conversion artifacts. The HD-XA2 has built-in processors to handle the multi-channel decoders for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS and DTS HD (core only). Move up to High Definition play with HD-DVD and upgrade your home for true home-theater enjoyment. Includes backlit remote control Unit Dimensions 17.2? x 13.58? x 2.91? - Home-theater component stackable Many movies are now available in HD-DVD format

5 out of 5 stars Toshiba HD-XA2 .......2007-12-24

I don't use all the bells and whistles. I just watch movies. You will need the updated software. Video is awesome. It's what HDTV should be. The audio out setting is not right without the software. The audio played 6 channel PCM till I upgraded the software.

5 out of 5 stars Best H.D........2007-12-24

This is an awsome H.D. player,In my opinion its has far better picture quality than the Blue Ray type players.I like being able to update my player when new updates are available.I have a Sharp 1080p lcd t.v. and with this player even my old d.v.d.s look great!

5 out of 5 stars Toshiba HD-XA2 a Wonderful HD player!!.......2007-12-18

I bought this player to augment my Sony Bluray player and become format neutral in the high definition DVD game.

I originally intended to look at the A30 series, but after reading other reviews, and finding that I could update the firmware, I opted for the XA2. I find it quiet and very fast to load compared to the Sony S301 Bluray. I now use the XA2 for all CD and SD-DVD playback (it does upconvert!!), as well as HD-DVD viewing. (All connections are through HDMI to my Mitsubishi 65" DLP via a Pioneer Elite audio-video receiver.)

From the short time that I have had it, the XA2 has performed flawlessly.

4 out of 5 stars Quite impresive.......2007-12-14

I must admit, I was skeptical of this player's dvd upconversion. I read a guys review about the HD-A35 being a better player and almost bought that one until I read some disturbing things about the frame rate. That being said, a lot people won't notice the the issue and it is still a solid player. Still, I'm quite the videophile and demand only the best.

Let me tell you something...this player rocks!!! After doing a side by side comparison with my PS3 and HD-A2 there was no competition. HD-DVD's looked crisp and clear, DVD's were cleaner and more refined, and the picture options are quite helpful. For those who are skeptical about the upconversion, don't be! I have a 50 inch LED DLP and I definately could tell the difference between the three. That being said, the PS3 is a great blu-ray player, but I use it mainly for games. As dumb is this sounds, I just like the look, design, and name of Hd-dvd better. It's also good to note that the new hd-dvd players are in the top 100 list (the a3/30/35) for electronics.

I got the hd-xa2 refurbished through Amazon. It said there was a cosmetic blemish and damage on the outer box. There was a slight rip on the repackaged box but the player was fine. No blemishes or scratches. Don't be afraid to buy this player refurbished, at least through Amazon.

From the Manufacturer

HD-XA1 Up-Converting HD DVD Player

The HD-XA1 up-converting HD-DVD player delivers outstanding resolution, bright, vivid colors, and stunning sound using the next-generation high-definition DVD technology. The HD-XA1 connects via HDMI to provide 720p/1080i resolution in the native format of HD-DVD disc content. Learn about HD DVD.

HD That Rivals HDTV The HD-XA1 disc drive has an astounding 36.55 Mbps transfer rate. By comparison, standard DVD has an average transfer rate of less than 10 Mbps, and HDTV has a rate of 24 Mbps. The more bits that can be allocated to video, the more detailed the resulting picture can be.

Pure Digital Connection The HD-XA1 connects to your HDTV with the latest advancement in audio/video equipment interfaces, namely the high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI). HDMI is the first industry-supported all digital audio/video connection providing the transmission of uncompressed digital video and multichannel audio on a single cable. The HD-XA1 will output HD content through the HDMI interface in the native format of the HD DVD disc content of 720p or 1080i.

Standard DVDs Taken to an HD Level Enjoy backward-compatibility and play your collection of standard DVDs on the HD-XA1. In addition, the standard-definition DVD picture resolution can be up-converted via the HDMI interface to near-HD quality, with output resolution of 720p or 1080i to match your HDTV's performance. Because the conversion takes place in the player, the signal remains free from excessive digital-to-analog conversion artifacts.

Processing Prowess The HD-XA1 has far-from-ordinary built-in multichannel decoders for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD (2 ch.) and DTS. The HD-XA1 employs four high-performance DSP engines to decode the multichannel streams of the wide array of audio formats. These 32-bit floating-point DSPs are world renowned for their high accuracy and are used in many high-quality audio solutions in the home theater market. The DSPs handle many of the required conversion processes, as well as the extensive on-board multichannel signal management for the HD-XA1, including user-selectable crossovers, delay management, and channel level management. After decoding and signal management, the digital audio is converted to analog by way of 24 bit/192kHz audio DAC and output as 5.1 analog audio.

Digital Audio Output Options The HD-XA1 can pass digital information to a surround-sound processor/receiver with S/PDIF or HDMI. For Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks, the bitstream will be passed through both connections, just as in a standard DVD player with the same interfaces. Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD soundtracks will be converted to a standard bitstream Dolby Digital) output through S/PDIF or HDMI. Additionally, all of the HD-XA1's supported audio formats can be decoded to PCM and output via HDMI in stereo or 5.1 multichannel, depending on the original soundtrack.

1 out of 5 stars Dont buy this player.......2007-11-24

Frustration after frustration. Bad customer support. It's a waste of money. The lens goes bad after about a year and Toshiba is laughing all the way to the bank!! The discs dont work and Universal will do nothing for you. NOT READY FOR PRIMETIME.

2 out of 5 stars impressions of unit.......2007-08-11

Unit looks very elegant, but It has a few hiccups like it will not play dual format disc the HD version, but it will play standard version.Go figure. Also rentals from netflix cross your fingers that they will play.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Get it STAY AWAY.......2007-07-13

I got this DVD player 2 weeks ago and it is already dead! - It is very slow to load a dvd or eject a DVD ~ 20 seconds. Then when I had issues with it not recognizing a DVD I whent on the network and downloaded a firmware upadate. This then killed all my HD capacity and now I only have regular dvd playback. Toshiba support said wait for another firmware update to see if it could fix it but did not say when probably a few months or more. Oh how I wasted $500 on this junk!

3 out of 5 stars SLOW.......2007-03-26

TO SLOW TO SET,GREAT PICTURE,I SEND FOR THE FREE DVDS NEVER GOT THEM,WHOLE LOT OF B.S.I FINALY GAVE UP.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent HD Experience, Low Cost ,too!.......2007-03-08

I just purchased a close-out Toshiba HD XA1 and the new Mitsubishi HD1000U 720p HD projector. Total cost for both items (new factory fresh) with shipping was $1260 (plus the five free HD DVD offier from Toshiba). Took out my old gear, hooked up the new using my existing 92" diagonal screen and universal ceiling mount. Ran a new 25' HMDI cable. A little bit of system set-up, less than I expected. The first movie up was Batman Begins, from Netflix, because of its HD reviews and use of the Dolby TrueHD hi-rez sound. Wow. That was the best $1260 I ever spent. 92" of bright clear hi-def for less than a typical 720p HDTV these days. Really really nice image and great sound using the 5.1 analog outputs (allowing the HD XA1 to do the TrueHD decoding). Again, I was prepared for a lot of fiddling to get it set-up -- but my out-of-the-box experience was very simple. The HD XA1 even had the Firmware 2.0 update installed from the factory -- ready to go with 5.1 TrueHD sound. I suggest more folks look into this combo of player and projector for a cost-effective HD home theater solution.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great for the $$$.......2007-12-13

I picked this up when it was on sale for around $150. It also came with 10 movies. So far I have had no problems. The HD movies are really nice. It also makes regular DVD's look really good too. I'm actually thinking of buying another if the price is right.

5 out of 5 stars NOT TOO BAD AT ALL.......2007-12-13

I also experienced the same problem about pauses and delayed audio at the middle part of the movie, but all it needed was firmware upgrade.
I called toshiba to request the disc for upgrade and i got it within a week.
In my opinion, there is no visual difference between 1080i and full hd.
It comes with hdmi cable, and it did its job, you do not have to buy an expensive one.

5 out of 5 stars HD-D3 PLAYER WORKS PERFECTLY.......2007-12-03

This model HD-D3 is the Costco version of the HD-A3...It's identical.

I had the same problems with this model as the previous reviewer did. I hooked my unit up to the internet via the ethernet port and downloaded the firmware update. It was a very large update. Following that upgrade, the unit worked perfectly.

The only problem I have with HD DVD players in general are the disk themselves. They must be perfectly clean before you view. I find even brand new disks need to be cleaned. I never get the pauses, skips, and stoppages if I clean the disk first. If you rent from a box store, or Netflix, they are especially vulnerable.

I also have an A20 as my 2nd tv is 1080P. It works great providing the the disks are clean, not damaged, the and firmware is current.

I am also getting a BLU Ray since finally the prices are coming down. This way I have more titles to choose from, and if either fails, I'll have a player for either! Enjoy!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Toshiba HD-D3 DVD Player.......2007-12-02

I got this HD DVD player from another store and it came with two free DVD's. The player had trouble playing one of the DVD's that it came with- freeze framing and distorting image and sound. I contacted Toshiba and they said it was a software problem and sent out a DVD with updated software to upload new programing into the unit. I did it and it still did not function correctly- same problem. I returned it to the store. Maybe I just got a defective unit but it seemed to respond to all the commands slowly. I am hoping to have better luck with another Toshiba model...
