Amazon.com Product Description
Now you can make digital archives of your favorite VHS tapes and copy your homemade DVDs to share with friends and family on VHS. Sony's RDR-VX500 DVD recorder/VCR combo saves space while simplifying component hookups. Offering broad format flexibility through DVD+R/+RW and DVD-R/-RW versatility, the deck permits dubbing from VHS to DVD and from DVD to VHS (subject to Macrovision anti-piracy technology in the source media).
In addition, the recorder sports a handy i.Link digital-video interface so you can copy DV/Digital8 camcorder tapes directly to long-lasting recordable DVDs. Other features include progressive-scan output for DVD (480p) for high-quality video reproduction on high-definition and HD-ready TVs, JPEG digital image and MP3 music playback from CD-R/CD-RW, and VCR Plus+ programming for easy navigation and control.
Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

DVD recorder is unreliable.......2007-10-15
I have been having trouble with the dvd recorder aspect since the first year I bought it. It made loud clunky noises during finalization, and then about half the time lost the data. I used the warranty and sent it in to be fixed. A couple months later, the recorder was unreliable again.
Now the warranty is expired, and I just lost all the data of a program I spent 3 hours recording (and won't be airing again). I've had it. This dvd recorder/ vcr combo is out.
Note I gave it two stars because the dvd player and vcr player work.
DO NOT BUY SONY PRODUCTS.......2007-05-26
their DVD records refuse to record a sat. picture - because of that idiotic macrovision chip technology.
AVOID ALL SONY RECORDERS. They refuse to record.
A terrible mistake.......2007-05-08
Can I give it a ZERO? You know how some companies do a lot of things..? Take Sony. They make walkmans, TV's and a lot of other things.. Having purchased Sony products before, I didn't have to many reservations about this DVD-recorder. After all, it's a Sony, right? WRONG! I have had nothing but unsatisfactory service with this item. I should have waited until "ALL" the "BUGS" were fixed, or at least reduced. The problems I have experienced are,
1.) The Player will not finalize the dvd.
2.) Takes a long time to "Process".
3.) Does not read all dvd's. I mean, isn't this one supposed to be compatable with just about everything?
Anyway, to make a long story short, BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Simple to use.......2007-04-15
This was recommended by a friend, and I was able to pick up one used on the cheap. Sony's never break. My house is full of their products, and this new one is a great addition. If you're like me, I had a huge pile of camcorder tapes I wanted to copy to an easier format. Using an cam tape adaptor, you simply put that in the vcr, push one button and it dubs to DVD! It doesn't get easier than that. As far as the transfer, there is no drop out in quality of pic or sound. Very crisp resolution. You can also i.Link direct from the front face plate to record DVD's or vcr tapes.
Not that great..........2007-01-08
Several times, this player wasn't able to read the DVDs or picture freezes at times while I checked the same DVDs with Panasonic DVD player that I have in different room and it reads fine. Had no problem with my CD-ROM/DVD of my computer reading any DVDs either, even though, it's Sony. Amazing, huh? It's been frustrating at times. This is the main reason I didn't like this player.
The display on the unit is too dim when it's turned off. I had to walk closer to it, so I can see the display. It's unusual, not same as other players which are more clearer.
When I set up recording, the menu won't show how long in time, except letters. I had to look up in manual to find which letters I want to set up. It's really a hassle. My Panasonic has the time shown on menu and it makes it a lot easier for me and save me time to look up.
Also, it's takes a little more time to load/DVDs comparing with other player that I have.
The only thing I like about this player is that it has open/close button on the remote, auto-tracking for VCR tapes, and recording setup menu is easy to use.
I'm going to replace this player with a different Panasonic player that I have ordered.
I'm sure there are more pros/cons, but I'm gonna leave here as it is. I'm sure anyone has different preferences. That's fine with me.

Nice product for $19.99 during Thanksgiving.......2005-11-29
I've just gotten it for two days. It stores my mp3 songs pretty okay and I transferred the songs to another laptop of mine. No memory loss.
Speed is okay fast, but I don't really need a super-fast flash drive for what I do with them. i.e. mainly transfers of files between computers.
My father uses it to transfer some of his digital photos from his old computer to his new one. It works well too.
By the way, my computer & laptops use Windows XP. And, I have no problem encountered with XP. The computer & laptop recongize the flash drive automatically everytime it is plugged in the USB slot.
Also, tt is a thin device and can be put in my wallet as well. Pretty nice.
Small, useful and as described!.......2004-07-04
I 've used this with Mac OS 10.2.8 and WinXP Pro - No problems. Notas solid as it could be but no less so than others.
You get what you pay for...........2004-06-18
This drive is supposed to work with Windows 98SE. I have spent at least an hour loading, unloading, and searching the WWW for a driver that will work. It doesn't work on my Dell laptop with Win 98SE. I tried contacting the "Tech Support" 3 times and never received a response. If you are buying to work on a Win 98 system, be careful. I can say that it does work on my WinXP system, but it appears to be very slow taking 29 minutes+ to copy 450 MB. Equal time to delete.
