Samsung DVD-R120 Progressive Scan DVD Recorder

Product Description

DVD Recorders are rapidly replacing the VCR as part of a home-theater component system. Besides getting digital-quality performance, the Samsung DVDR120 is remarkably easy to use. One Touch Recording button on Samsung DVD Recorders makes recording easier than ever. By simply pressing the button, Samsung DVD Recorder automatically searches the available recording space on the disc and starts recording the selected program. Pressing the ":Recording" button once will record up to 30 minutes and pressing twice will record up to an hour. Each time you press the button, Samsung DVD Recorder automatically records an additional 30 minute length of the selected program. The recording time on a disc is a maximum of 240 minutes depending on the recording mode. Once the recording is completed, simply press the "PLAY" button. Now the program that you just recorded will play. This unit will also play virtually all DVD formats and CD, CDR and CDRW.

Amazon.com Product Description

Samsung's two-tone silver/black DVD-R120 puts the power, quality, and convenience of digital video recording and playback at your fingertips. The stylish, slender component stands less than 3 inches tall but delivers everything from triple-format DVD recording (write-once DVD-R, rewritable DVD-RW, and random-access DVD-RAM) to progressive-scan video and playback of MP3 music and JPEG digital-photo files.

Front-panel audio/video inputs offer easy access for connecting external devices such as camcorders, DVRs, and VCRs, and the unit offers both analog and digital DV (FireWire IEEE 1394) inputs for high quality and great flexibility. Now you can edit and share your home-video archives with your family and friends.

Samsung uses its own multi-format technology that allows the DVD-R120 to support three digital recording formats: DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD-R. DVD-RAM is the most versatile format available to DVDs and can adapt to DVD-RW status for playback on older machines. The recorder's non-contact optical pick-up ensures that each disc will be scratch-free for repeated use. The DVD-RAM format also allows for mixed storage of video, audio, and other types of data from both the PC and AV worlds. The format's non-linear characteristics enable unique features like time-shifting and time-warping. This means you can start watching a program from the beginning while the middle or end is still being recorded. Write-once DVD-R media is widely compatible with other DVD players and PCs.

One-touch and timer recording offers extra convenience (initiating playback at 30 minutes and adding 30 minutes with each additional press of the button, up to the available disc time or 240 minutes, whichever is sooner), while digital noise reduction actually improves upon the quality of incoming interlaced video signals.

During playback, you'll also enjoy live picture pause and replay. And whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD-R120 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

Connections include 2 each composite- and S-video inputs (1 front and 1 rear) with accompanying stereo analog audio inputs (left/right RCA), 1 each composite-, S-video, and component-video outputs, and the component outs are selectable for either 480i or progressive 480p, depending on your TV. A choice of coaxial or optical digital-audio output facilitates hookup with an audio/video surround receiver for exciting multichannel surround sound from Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks.

What's in the Box
DVD player/recorder, a remote control, remote batteries, an audio/video cable, an RF video cable, a user's manual, and warranty/registration information.

1 out of 5 stars Out of sync!.......2007-09-02

I bought one of these about 18 months ago. I *think* the first coupla dubs I made were OK, but then I noticed audio and video were out of sync. I thought it was me for the longest time (I'll spare you why) until two weeks ago. Then I did tests that absolutely confirmed it was the product. At that point I did what I should have done a long time ago, which is check user reviews for "Samsung" and "out of sync." Lights up like a Christmas tree.
This product is worthless and the company ought to have the decency to remove it from the market or at least inform its customers of the problem. Would never recommend to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars DVD -R's should not be disposable.......2007-08-11

We have had this unit for a little over a year - and we have to spend over $100 to have it repaired for its "system error" It has always been a little quirky to use and now it is just useless.

Off I go to purchase another and not a Samsung this time.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD Burner!.......2007-07-19

I have bought two of these. I first bought one for myself and loved it so much I purchased on for my church to record the services. This is an easy burner to use and has a lot of great features and gives a great quality product. A must buy!!

1 out of 5 stars The worst ever! Please don't buy this!.......2007-03-21

I've had this Samsung DVD recorder over a year and it's been nothing but trouble. The power button on the remote wouldn't work out of the box, it's SUPER SLOW in opening & closing and playback is below VCR quality. TERRIBLE BUY!

2 out of 5 stars 2006 date issue and no fix for 2007 DST change.......2007-03-01

I bought this unit in Nov. 2005 and at first I liked it, however, once 2006 came around I noticed that it recorded scheduled weekly shows on the wrong day. The Samsung website did not provide much help and I found on some online forums that there was a bug with the 2006 calendar. Their solution was to change the year to 2007 or 2013, something like that. I kept checking the Samsung website for updated firmware to address the glitch but they never released anything.
Now we have 2007 and the US will change to DST 3 weeks earlier. Samsung support was pretty clueless about the whole DST change and said there was no updated firmware available and that I had to manually change the time.
In addition, the recorder will not start up when scheduled about 1/3 of the time. I have not been able to narrow it down or replicate, it seems random.
It is also very picky with blank media. I have not been able to record any DVD-R media at all, only DVD-RW, which is o.k. since I mostly record over the shows once I have seen them. In order to keep a copy, I have to finalize the DVD-RW disk and then make a copy to a DVD-R. There are also some issues with other DVD players and computers being able to play the finalized DVD-RW discs. My Mac mini with OS X 10.4.x will not play them at all. A Panasonic DVD player about 2 years old will not play them either. My Windows PCs and a Sony DVD player play them o.k.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it! .......2007-11-08

I purchased this product on a reputable website for electronics. When the product arrived, the dvd door would not open. The website I purchased I from told me I had to go through Lite-on. Lite-on told me I had to go through the original web site. Lite-on told me, based on the serial number, the product has already been refurbished once. After showing them the email from the original site stating the product was under Lite-on guarantee, Lite-on on finally agreed to fix the product. I had to pay for shipping and I followed the return instructions exactly. A few weeks later I called Lite-on and they said they they never received it and there is nothing they can do. So I am out the price of the DVD/VCR, the original shipping cost and the shipping cost to Lite-on, plus I have no product! Pay a little more and avoid having to deal with their customer service.

2 out of 5 stars Works but no cigar..........2007-10-17

Received the product. Needed to replace the VCR that blew up with Coax Connection (entertainment center is packed). Didn't really need a 5th dvd player in it (best dvd player is phillips dvp642 and cheap). Turns out RF Out only works for passthru cable box. Will not play DVD or VHS tapes through RF Out. Would be nice if it had said that somewhere online, instead of finding out the hard way. Copy to copy is simple, but playback from PC made DVD's gives Disc Load error.

1 out of 5 stars This price, only work as VCR /DVD player, no recording.......2007-06-12

Purchased from Costco last year, it was ok but VHS to DVD was very bad quality even manufacture issed VHS tape.

Few months back, DVD recorder simply won't record anymore with any empty DVD. Reading new DVD took 1min then big "FAIL" came out on small screen. So work as Play only DVD. I paid nearly $[...] and only work as play VHS and DVD. Very Disapointed.

Took too long to reading DVD before play. Copied DVD will skip all the time. If the DVD inside, not able to play VHS. Everytime when you want play VHS, you need remove DVD so machine can understand which one can is on !?

Anyway considering to move to children's room, not good at main room to use because too much stress! too late to return.

4 out of 5 stars Works Great so Far.......2006-12-20

I have owned this unit for 4 days now. So far I have copied 3 vhs tapes onto DVD-R disks, and one on the editable DVD+R disk that came with the unit. All are perfect. I have had a couple of minor problems. In one case the tape started at fast speed and I had to dump the first DVD, but that was right at the start. I didn't waste any time. In the second case, I tried to change the display while the disk was recording and it locked immediately. So, I chalk that up to learning how to use the unit.

This pretty much does everything it says it will do, so I'm happy. Now I have both a VCR and DVD player hooked up to my TV, giving it more flexibility. This is a real money saver and definitely worth the price. My local camera store wanted $45 per tape for transfer. So, I figure I've already made that back and still have about 30 tapes to copy. Haven't tried making a DVD from my 8mm video tapes yet, but the instructions are pretty clear so I don't anticipate problems.

The unit gives you 3 possible ways to duplicate and they all work. You can play the tape and start to record when you get to the right spot, you can go to the guider program using your remote, or you can push the one-touch copy button on the unit.

Overall, a good experience so far.

4 out of 5 stars Works transferring home videos to DVD.......2006-12-07

It was time for the Luddite to try another DVD recorder. My primary reason for buying was to transfer all the 8mm videos' of the kids to DVD. It did a good job of this and I was able to finish the job I started with a Toshiba recorder. Once I finished that I started converting the big stack of VHS tapes. A binder of 25 DVD's takes up a lot less space then the tapes. This went well. The big glitch is the Macrovision copy protect on some of the movies. I was able to transfer quite a few and get rid of the tapes, anything Disney of course will have Macrovision and wont copy. I have done about 30 DVD's so far and no coasters like the Toshiba would occasionally produce.

I did try timed recording on a DVD a few times and that seems to work fine.

I read a review that complained that DVD's made with this machine could not be imported to a PC for editing. I tried one and it was a success.

I did try timed recording on a DVD a few times and that seems to work fine.

4 out of 5 stars works great but you need to know it's limitations.......2007-04-25

I love this thing, it works great, came fast, everything is just as I wanted.
Easy to set up, easy to use. ONE THING--the dvd's I recorded are only in one format, pay attention to this--it's in dvd-r mode. That means you can't play the recordings on any other machine that is dvd+r mode. I can't even view them on my computer. So unless you plan on only viewing your recordings on this particular machine and not on any other, and you don't plan on giving them to anyone else who may / may NOT have a player that plays dvd-r format recordings...be forewarned. I reckon they'll standardize the format eventually--like vhs - beta debate years ago. But for now, just be aware. Otherwise, I really really like this machine!!

1 out of 5 stars I am still waiting..........2007-01-06

I'm in a quandary about how I should rate this. I have given it one star simply because there is nothing lower. I received it in October, and it never did anything but give us a blank blue screen with random bits of audio floating in now and then. I emailed SamsungMall (the seller) repeatedly, hoping to get some customer support; no one answered. In November I rated the seller--it was a bad rating, with warnings to buyers that all was not right with SamsungMall.
This flaming did the trick, and I received two solicitous emails from customer support and the seller himself, who explained that their server had been down and so had lost their email. It seemed like a decent enough excuse; they were finally paying attention to me, offering a refund and a gift if I would just remove the bad rating and warning. So I did. I figured it wouldn't hurt to be kind.
I also received free return shipping, which I utilized within three days. The unit was packed even more carefully than when I received it, all the necessary paperwork was on and in it, and I handed it to our letter carrier, a gentleman I have known and trusted for years. HOWEVER... that was weeks ago, and I have neither received a refund nor acknowledgement of the return.
I am sick of this company's ineptitude. All I want is to get my money back and NEVER buy anything from SamsungMall EVER AGAIN!!!

1 out of 5 stars not a good dvd recorder.......2006-11-22

does not have a remote control so it is impossible to navigate thru a video
does not have an instruction book
does not have any cords to connect it to a tv
i owned a panasonic dvd ram recorder that worked great for a year and a half before i bought this one to replace it but when i got the samsung it would not play the dvd rams that i used to play on my panasonic unit.
needless to say i sent it back for a refund and i will not buy anything else from samsung.

4 out of 5 stars Good product but does not have feature Amazon claims.......2006-09-02

I purchased this recorder based on Amazon's description. They claimed it had the capacity to play and record at the same time. It does not. I learned something - go to the manufacturer's web-site and check out their description before you order. For me, that feature was the main reason I chose this model so I returned it to Amazon and bought another model which did have that feature. Now - How was this recorder aside from that little glitch? GREAT !! True I only had it a couple of days before returning it - but trust me I gave it a good workout - looking for that elusive play/record feature. Don't let the REMANUFACTURED tag scare you - at least the recorder I received looked like it was brand new. It recorded a super picture and if you use RAM had lots of cool editing features. Be aware new DVD recording folks - if you use the -r or -rw media YOU MUST FINALIZE. This is not a mistake in the recorder - it is a function of the media. If you don't like that step then always use RAM media which does not require this step. The thing I really liked about this model is the ability to treat it very much like a VCR recorder. Movie is playing - you walk up and hit the record button - it records. No on screen decisions to make. When you want to play a dvd - your own recording or a commercial one - you put it in the recorder - close the door - it plays! One word of caution to all my techno not quite savvy boomers - READ THE INSTRUCTIONS when you set this thing up. A few minutes of education will keep you from being VERY frustrated later. The owners manual for this was very good - including diagrams on where the hookups go, etc.
After owning a recorder (and especially at the price of this one) I don't know why anyone would buy just a player. One last word about my Amazon return. This is the first time in MANY purchases from Amazon that I needed to return something, and though I HATE having to go through that stuff Amazon really handled it well. I printed out the return label, took it to the post office and when Amazon received it they credited my account. So don't be afraid to order!!
