Amazon.com Product Description
Tap into multimedia fun with Philips' broad-format, high-style, and ultra-slim DVP642 DVD player. The DVP642 is not only a high-end progressive-scan DVD player equipped to offer scintillating images on high-definition and HD-ready TVs, it's a tech-savvy player that spins your MP3- and JPEG-encoded recordable CDs (as well as Kodak's and Fuji's variants of the same) and CDs loaded with MPEG-4 and DivX video (3.11, 4.x, and 5.x files), perfect for viewing Internet-sourced content in your home theater. Want more? The player also converts Region 1/All Region PAL-formatted discs (the video standard in Europe) for viewing on standard NTSC televisions (and vice-versa, if only for video CDs).
The DVP642's progressive-scan functionality allows compatible TVs to display the even and odd numbered lines of an image in a single pass. This minimizes screen flicker, which is easier on your eyes.
|
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVP642 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
Playback options include five-disc resume, which lets you pick up where you left off on your five most recently viewed DVDs (not applicable for MP3 or JPEG CDs), disc-lock parental controls, and picture zoom for magnification of select images.
|
The player will play JPEG images one by one automatically, letting you zoom in, rotate, or flip the picture vertically or horizontally. For MP3 playback, the player offers track time display, album and track selection, and repeat (disc/album/track). The DivX media format is MPEG-4 based video compression that lets you save large files like films, movie trailers, and music videos on recordable media.
Philips' 4x video upsampling offers smoother images even when viewing interlaced (nonprogressive) signals through the player's component-video, S-video, or standard composite-video outputs. SmartPicture provides optimum picture settings for color, brightness, saturation, contrast, sharpness, etc., to enhance your overall viewing experience at all times.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.
What's in the Box
DVD-Video player, remote control with batteries, a user's manual, and an analog audio/composite-video interconnect.
Customer Reviews:
Poor Product.......2007-12-16
I just purchased this in order to work with PAL region dvds.
It is less than 2 weeks old and has been used maybe 6 times and has stopped working. Every time I put in a dvd it sends back the message 'no disc'.
I see from the reviews I am not the only person this has happened to.
I feel like I just threw away $60.00.
I strongly recommend spending a little extra money for better quality.
Quite disappointed!!!.......2007-12-07
I bought this DVD player for 10 months and now it's dead!!! The warranty cover labor and CRT for only 6 months and the parts for 12 months. I didn't play it a lot for sure. Is the product life too short?
Skips frequently.......2007-12-01
I bought this DVD player about a year ago, and is a decent DVD player overall. It is very reasonably priced, and plays a variety of formats and I have not had to buy any other DVD player to play my DVD/CDs/DIVX/MP3. My main reason for buying this DVD player was to play our wedding DVDs which were in the PAL format, which it has played without any problems. My only gripe with this player however is that it frequently skips, and this seems to be more of a problem with my home videos that I have converted into DVDs. Other than this, I am happy with this player.
amazing dvd player.......2007-11-26
I bought this DVD player to be able to watch movies in .avi (divx, xvid, etc.) format. Works well with most of these files, however some are not compatible, so you will have to discover by trial and error. Plays all regular store-bought DVDs. The remote is badly designed. The buttons are not laid out in an easy to recognize layout. Everyone in my family has pressed the scene back button instead of the rewind button numerous times, which gets pretty annoying fast. Finding the pause or play button also takes several moments, even if the room is lighted and you can see the remote. Also, I think it makes a lot more noise then my old DVD player. You shouldn't notice it though, unless you are specifically listening for it.
Standby light blinking.......2007-11-23
I received this as a gift last Christmas. It quit after about 6 months. I finally dusted it off today and Googled for a fix. I found a fix on an Amazon forum. It cost me about $10 to repair it and 20 minutes of my time. Mine is an older unit so maybe Phillips has fixed the power supply capacitor problem by now.
It is a good unit otherwise.

You Get What You Pay For.......2007-12-07
This DVD player never operated at a very high level, but then you get what you pay for. At the original price of approximately $40, this player "worked" for a year and a half but there were always problems with it such as stopping and starting during movies, freezing up entirely, failing to recognize that there was a disc in the tray to read, the tray refusing to open... I was pretty shocked since Philips makes quality products. It wouldn't have been so bad if I'd have gotten a year and a half of great play, but no such luck! Don't buy this model - upgrade!
1 in the garbage, 1 returned.......2007-09-19
2 of them broken, one bought brand new locally, the other refurbished from here. I returned the broken refurb for a refund, but I paid 2x shipping cost for $40 player and got nothing. The one bought locally wasn't opened till months later and the receipt was lost, so that was a complete loss. Don't be fooled by the features, don't waste your money.
Remanufactured DVP642.......2006-06-12
Great valued unit - but buy it new. Bought a remanufactured unit as a second DVD/DivX player - died on me just after the 90 day warranty ended (No Disc error for DVDs, plays CDs fine). Meanwhile, my original non-remanufactured unit is still working fine after a year and a half.
Good unit for the price ... mileage may vary!.......2006-06-02
I've enjoyed this unit and just bought my 2nd after the first one died ... lasted about 1 1/2 yrs. Other reviews indicate that these units seem to die after some time and I've read it's related to a power capacitor (probably an easy fix for someone skilled in electronics). Other problems are that some DVD-Rs won't load in this ... seems really arbitrary though, not any specific brand. I like it to play .avi files from the computer. If I were just playing store bought DVDs, I think I would choose something a little more reliable. I bought my second one from a retailer that offers a 4 year extended warranty for $20. I figure the extra money is worth it as 4 out of the 5 DVD players I've owned have died within 3 years. So my advice ... make sure you have a good warranty and expect to replace it, enjoy it while it works.
Remanufactured Phillips 642.......2006-05-05
Worked well for 30 days and then started having problems turning on. Really a pain. Won't turn on normally and have to spend 10 min. or so pushing the stand-by button to get it go on. Don't be a remanufactured one.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT DVD Player.......2007-11-17
The Philips DVP642 DVD player is a great device with a ton of features with the geek in mind. Many DVD players perform the basic function - perform DVDs, but the DVP642 does more then that. One popular feature is DivX ability. DivX is a video codec that allows for smaller sized video files. Normally, a player wouldn't read these files but the DPR642 does. It also provides PAL to NTSC conversion, which allows you to import your favorite movies only available in other countries. The DVP642 provides many outputs, including opitical out and component for high quality audio and video. It also supports progressive scan. One thing this DVD Player is lacking is upscaling of video via HDMI, which some may say is a dealbreaker.
Overall I really enjoy my DPR652 and think it is the best DVD Player for under $50. It's PAL conversion and DivX compatibility are great features for such a cheap player.
