Amazon.com Product Description
Record your home movies and your favorite TV programs easily to DVD disc with the Panasonic DMR-ES25S progressive scan recorder/player, which provides ultimate flexibility in recording media options. It also includes an HDMI digital audio/video output, which can "up-convert" standard DVD movie discs to near HD resolution. Where standard DVD players (even progressive scan models) provide just 480 lines of resolution, the DMR-ES25S up-converts the picture up to 720p and 1080i high-def video formats--taking full advantage of your HD television's sparkling resolution. (Note that your TV must have an HDMI connection; HDMI cable not included.)
Choose from a full spectrum of recordable DVD media--write-once DVD+R and DVD-R discs or rewritable DVD-RW/+RW and DVD-RAM discs. (For temporary storage, such as your favorite weekly shows, DVD-RAM discs are a great choice as they can be rewritten more times than DVD-RW/+RW discs.) It's easy to record TV programming with the built-in analog TV tuner with RF pass-through and seven-day TV Guide electronic programming guide. In addition to standard DVD movie and CD audio discs and its compatible recordable formats, the DMR-ES25S can play back CD-R/RW, dual layer DVD-R/+R, and VCD disc formats as well as JPEG, and MP3 digital formats. You can also view individual images and photo slideshows using the integrated Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot (compatible with JPEG and TIFF file formats).
Panasonic's Time Slip function consists of two features designed to give you added flexibility and control when making DVD recordings: Chasing Playback and Simultaneous Record & Play. With Chasing Playback, you don't have to wait for an entire program to be recorded before watching it from beginning to end. This feature allows you to watch a program that's currently being recorded from any point that's already been recorded--while continuing to record the live program in progress. Simultaneous Record & Play allows you to record a program onto a disc while simultaneously watching any other program that's previously been recorded on the same disc.
You can set your recorder to one of five different recording speeds, each varying in recording quality and length. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP & SP modes provide less recording time with higher quality recording, and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording. There's also the FR (Flexible Recording) mode that lets you record with the best picture quality possible for the recording time and remaining space on the disc.
The Direct Navigator feature makes it easy to find a previously recorded program on a disc. A list of recording dates, times, channels and (user-entered) titles are shown on screen. With the Playlist Playback function, you can perform simple non-linear video editing using, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, or copying selections
Jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording right away with the Rapid Random Access function when using DVD-RAM discs. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space available, this DVD recorder can record data on available space throughout the rest of the disc. You will also avoid searching for a blank spot to start recording, or accidentally recording over desired material.
Enjoy a great picture on you flat screen LCD or plasma HDTV using the component video output, and immersive surround sound via the optical digital audio output for Dolby Digital and DTS home theater effects. It also offers a FireWire port (also known as IEEE1394 or i.Link) for direct connection to a digital video camcorder, enabling you to download footage directly to disc. The full lineup of video and audio connections includes:
- RF Input: 1
- Composite video/audio input: 2 (1 front)
- Composite video/audio output: 1
- S-Video input: 2 (1 front)
- S-Video output: 1
- Component video output: 1
- HDMI audio/video output: 1

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections .
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.
High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 1080 lines.

Good Recorder, Spotty Reliability.......2007-12-10
Have had unit over one year. Performance is good. However one month before the one year warranty expired the main circuit board went out. It would have cost more than what I paid for unit to repair it. It also took some 10 weeks for the service center to get the replacement part from Japan. Panasonic's extended warranty offered to me after the warranty repair also cost more than what I spent originally for the unit.
Lame customer service........2007-12-07
Worked okay as a basic DVD recorder for the first year of using, no major complaints. The problem came, when the unit stopped working 2 weeks after the warranty ran out. The player refused to read any disc I put in it, renduring it useless. I called Panasonic hoping they could help, since the warranty had just run out. The woman I talked to said she would try to help, she refered my case to the techs, who were supposed to call back within 24 hours. I waited three days, still no call. I called back, they told me they'd send a CD with new firmware, I told them the player wouldn't read any disc, how was it supposed to help? They assured me it would. Two weeks went by with no disc showing up. I called again, they said the disc hadn't been shipped yet. A few days later the disc showed up, and of course it wouldn't read it, so that proved useless. I called back again, told them what all had happened. They said that too much time had passed and that if I wanted repairs it was going to cost me $100, which wasn't worthwhile, since I paid $120 for the unit. I gave up. Planning to buy another recorder soon.
Solid performer for my purposes.......2007-11-29
There are lots of reviews of this product, so you should get a pretty good sense of its capabilities and limitations. Keep in mind that different people have different expectations for a product like this, with its wide variety of possible uses. I can only add a few reactions based on the way I have personally tried to use the product.
I use this unit mostly as a VCR replacement, recording standard-def TV programs from analog cable channels. I use DVD-RAMs because they're durable, and individual programs can be erased easily after I've viewed them. The DVD-RAM format also provides DVR-like features, such as the ability to start watching a program from the beginning before it has finished recording, or recording a program while watching a different program on the same disc. You can trim and split programs easily and add chapter marks with the press of a button (good for "bookmarking" your current location, if you need to remove the disc and return to it later). This unit really shines with the DVR-RAM format. (I have even discovered that the DVD-RAM recordings can be read and encoded to DivX by AutoGordianKnot, if you have a DVD-RAM-capable drive on your computer, so there is a way to get DVD-RAMs into another format if you really need to.)
I also occasionally record programs to DVD+R or DVD-R for "archiving." Some reviewers have reported compatibility issues with some media or other DVD players, but I have had no problems. Even using cheap spindled media, the +Rs and -Rs from this unit play fine on my other DVD players. You have to finalize the discs, of course, before they'll play on another player.
I have used the SD card slot to view pictures from my digital camera, and it works as advertised. I have also used three different video output connections - S-Video, component, and HDMI - at various times, and they all seem to work fine. This is not a high-def product, so don't expect HD quality, but the video quality is about as good as one can expect from SD source material.
I think the best features of this unit involve the recording modes. Recordings made using XP (1-hour) and SP (2-hour) are excellent, as is probably the case with almost any DVD recorder. This unit, however, has a surprisingly good LP mode (4-hours), with quality almost as good as SP, and a very useful FR mode (flexible record), which adjusts the quality to achieve the best possible recording with the space remaining on the disc.
As a DVD-Video player/recorder, I consider this unit a solid performer with a basic feature set. I give it five stars because of the DVD-RAM performance and the outstanding LP and FR recording modes.
Good DVD Recorder with Closed Captioning.......2007-11-21
I bought this DVD recorder because I was told it would handle recording closed captioning. I could not get an answer from Sony Product Support regarding the Sony models. I bought this recorder because of Closed Captioning which I use to help my son learn to read.
The recorder works well most of the time. My biggest problem is that I use -R dvds off of a spindle and sometimes they don't record. Never write on the -R dvd before putting it in the drive and handle it as little as possible. Panasonic support said in an email to me that it is not guaranteed to work with spindle media. I have lost a handful of important things I was trying to record off of cable TV and find this annoying.
Sometimes also I can't power off the recorder. I have to unplug it. I will unplug it sometimes before recording something I want to save just to make sure it is reset correctly. This seems to improve recording on -R but I can't quantitatively prove it.
I found that if I bought the cheapest DVD-RAM disks from panasonic they work fine. No need to spend more on the more expensive -RAM disks.
I have successfully copied -R and +RW on my computer without a hitch. Just make sure to finalize them.
My only other complaints is no eject button on the control and it would be nice to be able to create chapters on media other then -RAM.
When it works, it's great........2007-10-25
Had this unit for about 8 months now and have taken it twice for warranty repair. When it works, I love it--especially the FR function. It always records wondefully--but it can ruin a disk when finalizing.
After owning it for 3 months, it started to make a grinding sound when finalizing. Then the finalizing process failed--the device reported the disk was unreadable. It can't be the DVDs--I use several major manufacturers. The burner fails on all types and will fail in the middle of a batch. The repair place fixed it the first time. Now, three months later, it did it again--ruining about 50% of the DVDs. I took it back and the repair place said they couldn't duplicate the problem. Brought it home, it's failing, and I'm very frustrated by the unreliability of the device. Time to contact Panasonic, I suppose.

Bad news -- Cannot boot from this device.......2006-07-15
I bought this drive for my Fujitsu P1510D Tablet PC which does not have an internal CDROM, and thus requires an external CDROM to reinstall the operating system. The Fujitsu supports booting from an external USB CDROM, but after being unable to boot from this device, I was informed by LaCie Tech Support that this CDROM does not support booting from it! There was no disclosure of this limitation in the sales literature or user guide. I am going to try to get my money back. It ticks me off that one has to think like a lawyer to keep from getting shafted by so many corporations these days.
I'm very pleased!!.......2006-03-01
The design and functionality are great, but it's very delicate, so you have to be careful to handle this with lots of care!!
LaCie provided no support for a defective product.......2005-10-16
When I first connected this drive, my computer recognized it just fine. However, I could not get it to recognize any blank DVD (DVD+R, DVD-R, or DL). It did recognize and burn CD's. I connected this drive to 3 other computers and had the same results. I emailed LaCie tech support. After two days without a response, I decided to call their support line which IS NOT toll free. After listening to on hold music for 2 hours, I gave up and decided to return the product. I finally did get a response from their tech support. They told me to exchange the unit. I find it completely unacceptable that a company, with the brand recognition that LaCie has, does not have a toll free tech support number, takes over two hours to answer a tech support call, and takes over 3 days to reply to an e-mail when their response is to exchange the unit.
Good product, no problems........2005-09-16
Does what it promises, and looks slick doing it. My only quibble with it is that it basically works like a Laptop CD Burner, with the flip out/ pull out tray. I would have preferred a "traditional" style loader.
Low quality construction, broken in a month.......2005-07-11
At first use, cd burned fine & read fine. After travelling by airplane, with cd burner packed in hand luggage (i.e. carry-on) and well packed (wrapped in thick sweater, put in middle of bag), cd would not burn (would not recognize blank CD-R on insertion), and would not read pre-written cds. It does, however, still read DVDs, but that is all.
This is presumably a consequence of poor quality design & construction; design looks slick, but in such a slim package, the components must not have been solidly secured. Recall also reading Amazon reviews of Lacie Porsche designed hard drives experiencing similar complete hardware failures.
