Coby TF-DVD7377 Player Divx USB/SD.......2007-11-09
PROs: Nice array of supported storage media. Low price.
CONs: No Shuffle-Play. No ID3 display. JPEG files best under 1 mb.
Lot of player for the money. The absence of shuffle-play and ID3 tag display can be forgiven on such an inexpensive unit ($110 at Amazon.com). JPEG files smaller than 1mb display immediately and work well with the slideshow feature.
1. USB function. I mixed Music, Video and JPEG files on a single USB drive and they loaded right away. From the opening screen you can choose whether to play MP3, Video or JPEG files. The USB/SD media must be formatted with the FAT file system to work. The USB drive inserts
"upside-down." So, if you have nice lights and dials on the top of your thumbdrive you won't see them while its inserted in this player. The SD card goes in the proper way, and functions just like the USB drive. The player will read DivX, MPEG2, VCD and SVCD video files. I put a short movie in all the different formats on the same drive. The unit played them all, one after another.
2. The player had no trouble loading video from DVD-/+RW media (I have both) encoded by my cheap LiteOn player. I was pleased, as I will save money not having to buy anymore DVD-R disks to record news and sports programs to view at work.
3. For JPEG photos. Click on picture and start slideshow with that photo being first in show. Once inside the slideshow you can set the time each photo is displayed. You can also zoom the photo and rotate it. Once the slideshow begins it plays through all subsequent folders then starts again from the beginning.
4. Video Files: DivX/MPEG2 files. Press play and the highlighted file plays. Once file is playing you can set repeat function for the file. If there are several video clips in the folder it will play through all the video clips without further prompting.
5. MP3 files. Also plays WMA files. MP3/WMAs play immediately when the storage media is read by the player. The first song in the first folder starts the set. The player continues into all subsequent folders without further prompting. Once a song is playing you can set the repeat function for the file, the folder or all song files. Each time the player is turned on it starts with the first song in the first folder. You can, however, stop the play, put the player in your bag and start play back where you left off a few hours later. This "pause" feature works as long as the battery don't run out of power or the storage media not removed from the player.
6. Music CDs/Data CDs. The player plays CD Music Disks just like a car stereo; nothing fancy. You get song number, time of song and total time of CD. It will play MP3 files on a Data CD the same way that it plays MP3 files from USB and SD removable medium (you'll get the same screen displays). When playing music CDs the screen goes blank after one minute, saving the battery. Hit display to see information on a song. After another minute the screen goes blank again. With MP3s and other media you have to physically close the screen down for it to go off (the music continues to play). This feature should add significantly to portable usage. In a future version, I hope the Coby engineers will add a way to read MP3 files from DVD, as well.
7. Overall product Quality. A good build for an inexpensive player. The screen won't win any awards, but it is clear and crisp. There are no controls to brighten or darken the screen, but, I could read the folder and file names from up to six feet away. Having a 7" screen, most likely the user will be only about 3 to 4 feet away from the unit (closer if its on your lap). (Interesting note: after playing a 2hr DVD I touched the bottom of the unit and it was only lukewarm. It was sitting on the plastic CD/DVD storage box on my desk. So, I am not sure this unit gets too hot to sit on your lap.) The instruction manual was adequate, as there are not a lot of bells and whistles on this player.
8. Sound quality, like beauty, is in the eye/ear of the beholder. The music was passable for a small, inexpensive device. It sounded much better with the included earphones. Also, when transmitted (FM) over my truck stereo it sounded great.
9. Battery Life. After a fresh charge I got through 3hours and 17minutes of Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers. There was no noticeable degradation of the picture or sound. It just went Poof! But, then, here comes the real surprise. I plugged the player to the AC mains. After hitting the power button on the remote the player started back at the place it stopped when it powered down. So, I was able to continue watching the remaining 25minutes or so of the movie without searching through the disk for the part I hadn't seen yet. I would imagine that if you take out the battery or remove the disk you would lose that stored memory. But that's a nice feature.
10. I'm used to heavier, more balanced remotes. But, this remote is smaller than the width of a single CD case (but not too small). So, you can put it anywhere you'd put your CD cases. That makes it handy to carry along when traveling. The IR is limited, so get close to the player and you'll have no problems.
Overall. This is a nice little unit for the price. I would like to have seen more features (especially a music-shuffle feature and ID3 display). But, a swivel-screen unit that plays DVDs and offers two other (expandable memory) readers/players (USB/SD) gives great functionality for the price. Add the ability to use +/-RW media as well and you have yourself a bargain. If this unit gets me through a whole year of midnight shifts before it breaks down, then I would consider it money well spent. I recommend it!
Great DIVX/AVI Player.......2007-10-17
I bought this as a gift and since there are no reviews for it, I thought that my review would help those that are thinking of buying this player.
First things first...
1)I PRIMARILY bought this so that I could have a portable DIVX or AVI player. I looked at all the other players and they either cost an arm or a leg or they were too big.
Let me say that it plays AVI/DIVX files without a hitch. I've watched numerous AVI files without a problem, and because this device handles DVD's and AVI files without a hitch, I give it a 5 stars!
2)The screen on this little 7 inch screen is awesome. Very clear and sharp. I bought another COBY tablet player a year ago, but it broke after about a year or use and the picture quality was not that great. This thing is WAYYYY better than that one was.
3)Battery life is pretty good. So far I've had it play non stop for over 2 hours without a problem.
4)Audio is great and also when you hook this thing up to a t.v. with the supplied cables the sound transfer well to the t.v.
Now the Negative....
1)The remote on this thing sucks big time! You have to be super close to the player and you pretty much have to have it pointed straight at it to work right. This is the same remote that they package with their other Coby players, a real piece of junk.
2)This thing is made almost entirely of plastic! The picture looks great and I thought I was buying a metal encased DVD player (the picture looks like a black matte metal case), but be warned, this thing feels cheap! The screen swivels around so that it can fold into a tablet style player and for that it's cool, very compact, but the screen also shakes a bit back and forth (because it swivels) and the latch to keep the screen closed is really a piece of junk. If I was grading on this feature alone I would have to give it a 2. I fear that it'll fall apart if I handle it too roughly.
I just can't get over how cheap this thing feels.
In case your wondering why I scored it so high, even though I trash the build quality. Well, it's because it does what I bought it for so well. If you want a DIVX/AVI player that handles these files without a hitch and you don't want to spend a bundle, then get this player.....just be warned of it's build quality. The build quality seems very crappy but I've only owned it for a couple of days. I will try to remember to update my review in a few months to let you know if this thing is holding up. (If I can figure out how to update my review).
If your wondering if would reccomend this item to you, I would have to say yes, but only for the reasons that I listed above...a great little Divx player! Hope this helps any potential buyers.

DVD Player stopped working...........2007-11-14
I would NOT recommend purchasing this. The DVD player worked very well for the first few times I used it but probably the 6th time I used it, it cut off to static during the middle of the movie and now will not read any DVDs. It turns on for about 5 seconds and loads as if nothing is wrong then just craps out. With so many options on the market it would be smart to pick another DVD player!!!
Not Happy.......2007-10-16
Overall the its an OK player, but what turned it from a 5 star rating to a 2 is product detail by Amazon. I looked high and low for weeks for a 7" screen dvd player with hi-resolution which Amazon's descriptions claims this to be. Under the specification it says the screen is a 720x480 but when I got my player and measured it out, it was only 480x234 at best. Now I know some retailers would describe a 480x234 as 1440x234 to make it look better than it really is, but I purchased this from Amazon thinking they of all people would have the right specs. Lesson learned, can't trust anyone's specs.
Just what I needed.......2007-10-08
I needed an easy to use, easy to carry and easy to use via battery DVD player and that is what I got.
Flimsy, short life span.......2007-08-20
Bought in April, broken by August (stopped reading discs). Even by the standards of these cheap Chinese DVD players, this one was flimsy.
The build quality was suspect -- the auto adapter had a very long thin wire instead of thicker, more durable cord. It was impossible to use the car charger with battery backup, so that when you turned off the car, the movie restarted unless you were using battery (and when the battery was dead, you couldn't switch power sources without restarting the disc).
I had better luck with the Coby.
well worth it.......2007-08-10
this is my first portable dvd player. for months i did an online search looking for the best buy for my money. i read several reviews regarding
portable players, and noted complaints about small screens, bad audio, not the sharpest picture, etc, so i was not even sure i wanted to buy one of these type units....however i came across the axion, studied the wonderful reviews and decided to buy it....
WHAT AN AWESOME MACHINE THE AXION IS.....
i am quite comfortable watching the 7" screen, the picture is clear and sharp, the audio is more than adequate without earphones, keeping in mind that i do not use it on an airplane, have not used the remote yet, but the controls on the unit are very easy to use.
the battery last two hours, most times i use it plugged into a wall outlet anyway. right now i am on vacation with no regular dvd player available, last evening i was able to hook up this axion to the tv and watch the dvds on a larger screen, but keep in mind that to do this you also need an extra cable (the one with the prongs that hook up into the 3 different colors on the TV, dont know what it is called) this cable is not supplied by axion, so have one available to hook up to the tv, the other end (prongs) are hooked up to "the cable axion does supply".
i have had this unit for a month now, so at this time i cannot attest to longevity of the unit, i will post again at a later date, but i can tell you at this point in time the axion was well worth the money.

Tech Talk
DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.
What's in the Box
Portable DVD player, remote control (with battery), car power adapter, AC adapter, AV cable, rechargable battery, printed operating instructions

SP-D1700 no better than SP-D1600.......2007-08-15
So. I get this new fresh from the factory SP-D1700 and it works fine, with very light use, for about 7 or 8 months. Understand, when I say "light use", I mean maybe one DVD a month. Then, just like the SP-D1600 it just one day stops working. I continues to load disk and once and a while it will play one for about 20 seconds, then it quits. I've written a letter to Mark Simons, Vice President for digital products division. That was three weeks ago;so far I've been roundly ignored.
October 7, 2007
So here is my follow up after sending my second letter to Mr Simons on August 29,2007. Still no response. I have since however, read may complaints on various about being given the run around to just being ignored by toshiba(small"t" from now on). These are signs of a company that is in trouble. I will chalk this up to experience and stay clear of anything made by toshiba in the future. THANK YOU MR. SIMONS.
Nice basic all format player.......2007-07-04
GOOD: Solid buttons, bottom mounted battery, a/v out AND in, plays DIVX or XVID formats (one main reason I chose it).
BAD: does not play DVD+R (just a reminder - description lists the "minus" format)
A problem cropped up after about 8 trips/6 months (adult use-very low stress). Disk spin up was always noisy, with frequent grinding noises. Lately it takes many open/close trials to get it to start to spin a disk when inserted and even freezes during playback on new DVDs.
Judging from other reviews on the web, I seem to be an isolated case.
great player.......2007-05-13
I'm really happy I got this. Works perfect and has a resonable battery life. At least one movie and part of another one before charging.
Read before you buy this........2007-04-27
I ordered this unit as a birthday present for my 90 year old mother. Thought I would try it before taking it to her. It worked for 20 minutes. Then the screen went blank and stayed blank no matter what I tried. I've ordered so much from Amazon over the years and always could return if unhappy for any reason, so I hadn't paid attention to the reviews of the current online seller ANTonline. Beware! These people are unresponsive and uninterested. They would not accept a return or even reply to my emails. Read their reviews. I'm not the first one.
The Toshiba SD-P1700 unit does have a very nice form factor for a small 7" screen DVD player. Screen was bright with a good image. If it had worked it would have been very nice I think. If Amazon starts selling it and you like the specs you might try it. But, I don't recommend you try the seller I had.
I had to rush out to a bricks and mortar and buy a Phillips PET 724 7" DVD player for Mom. Now I'm stuck with trying to get get Toshiba to repair their junk. As someone in previous review was told, "Buy anything but a Toshiba" may be the best advise.
Toshiba SD-P1700.......2007-03-29
Haven't had a chance to use extensively, but my checkout was impressive. Picture was excellent and sound very good. Flying to Europe this summer. Will get a good checkout then.

Big Disapointment.......2007-04-20
When I first purchased this portable DVD player I was quite pleased with it. The picture was clear and the sound came thru nicely. However, after just 6 months of use, it just stopped working. It keeps telling me "no disc". It has only been used by my daughter while sitting in the car so it has not been dropped or abused in anyway.
Now I know why it was on sale. I won't buy this brand again.

Sorry to say, my husband has not even unpacked this DVD player! He wasn't too happy that our daughter bought it. We both told him to hurry up & make up his mind whether we should return it, but he hasn't done that either...
Sorry I can't do better than this.

Like the Energizer Bunny!!! Keeps going...........2006-08-29
Bought this 3-4 years ago before Portable DVD players became really popular. (I paid like $250+ for it.) It has taken a beating from my 3 yr old..kicking it many, many times, dropping it, etc. and it just keeps going. We mostly use it in the van, but also use the plug in adapter once in awhile. We've never used the battery. It has never skipped (only if the DVD is dirty so not a player problem). The only problem we are having right now is we need a new car adapter and will order one. I bought a second player for my older DD so she can watch her own movies (a Panasonic-only because it was really cheap) so I hope that one lasts just as long. I basically just use mine in the car. There were times that it didn't cut on, but I never power it off so what we do is turn the power button off and then back on and it's good to go. We really got our money's worth.
Not worth the price.......2006-03-27
My mom bought this DVD player for my kids this past Christmas. She paid $179, with the promise of a $30 rebate. It stopped working after a month. It runs and runs but nothing appears on screen. Unfortunately, she had purchased it two months in advance of giving it, so that the 90-day warranty had just run out. I called the company and explained that we had only had it since December. After a lot of back and forth, the only solution they offered is for me to give them $49 to fix it, or $79 to replace it. I would rather put $79 towards a real name-brand DVD player. (And the rebate has yet to arrive, two months later...)
Worth to buy.......2006-02-25
Sound and Picture clarity is good, I dislike the batery usage, not good for more than 2.5 hours movie.

beyond expectations!!.......2007-05-24
This is the first review that I have posted so, I hope that it helps your decision. When I bought the player I expected a fragile player with a so so image. I was wrong. the player is sturdy. the picture is great! If you get this player, mess around with it, before getting confused by the instructions, to find out how everything works. the picture color is adjustable and the sound is great. the only reason that I use headphones is so that people around me don't hear my horror movies.
Great DVD Player for the money!.......2007-04-23
I can't say enough great things about this DVD player! Perfect portability, nice viewing screen, full charge lasts for entire length of most movies - about 2-2.5 hours. Seems very rugged but I would highly recommend a dvd player case just to keep it in prestine condition. I purchased a Targus DVD backpack to carry mine in. Fits quite nicely. I had previously purchased the Coby 7" dvd tablet player and it didn't work at all. Wouldn't read the dvd's (even new ones) and kept making a scratching noise. Needless to say I sent it back right away and bought this one instead. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

No frills, no thrills little workhorse.......2007-11-29
It takes a lot to keep my mind on exercise, and so I decided to invest in the Philips PET710 in hopes of finding some way to distract myself as I walked on my treadmill. Over all, I'd say it's been a good choice. The screen is just wide enough for me to enjoy a favorite television show while still allowing me to balance it atop the treadmill. The picture is good enough, and even improves the quality of copies of multi-generational tapes.
It has two drawbacks which, while they aren't serious enough for me to feel I made a mistake, are a little annoying. The first is that the volume can't be boosted to a point where it's easy to hear over the noise of my treadmill. The sound isn't lost, it's just a bit low for me. The other thing, which I find significantly more bothersome is that there's no resume function. I haven't gotten to the point where I'm going to be running through a two-hour film, so if I stop the machine, my place is lost and I have to find it again the next time I go to work out. Meh, they're small things in light of the fact that I do use it to convince myself to exercise.
If you want some basic function in a portable DVD player, this is a good bet. More bells and whistles? Look elsewhere.
Love the Phillips PET710- VERY DURABLE.......2007-09-01
We actually purchased this DVD player about 2 years ago for my 5 year-old-son. I can personally vouch for its DURABILITY!!
My son takes it with him in the car and we take it when we go out to eat(he watches when he is done and we get to peacfully finish our meals). It has had root beer spilled on it and despite a sticky hinge it still plays just fine.
The only complaint we have is the battery. THis is the only reason I do not give it 5 stars. It protrudes out the back making it impossible to put in a carry case.(especially one for the car that attached to the back of the headrest). NO case comes with the player becasue they probably cannot make one that would accomodate the battery. The battery initially lasted for nearly 3 hours, but after repeated use (and I mean repeated) the battery life is clearly depleating- good luck finding a replacement... Our battery is also broke due a fall from the the table (remember that durability). The DVD player survived, but the small plastic notches that hold the battery in place broke off- so our battery is held on woth duct tape- and it still works!!
Bottom line- this is a great product as far as reliablity and durability for the children.
If I am not able to find a replacement battery I may just have to purchase new DVD player and use it for both..
Phillips portable dvd player.......2007-08-26
I was so please with this one, I bought 2 more, from Wallmart, and gave them as gifts, for use in another country. Reason: besides it's quality, price, ease of use, reliability, it has the extra important features of also being able to play PAL dvds (also CD's), and both it and the charger, work, just fine, off the crummy electricity of different voltages and hertzes, of the country in question. I was there, and tested it thoroughly for 2 weeks and it never even blipped once. The screen, can be swivled, tilted, just and clear, except in bright light, and the speakers are not good,if a lot of background noise. Understandable and forgiveable downsides. I wish the battery would last a bit longer. oh well. nothing perfect. It also has TWO headphone jacks, and if used with noise supression headphones, it's a champ!
The battery does charge pretty fast though.
I loved it! I regret to say, they've "improved" it, with a higher price, with features I have no interest in, in the newer models. They fixed something that wasn't broke. Sigh.
Terrible, Do Not Purchase or You'll Regret IT.......2007-08-16
This is now my 3rd Phillips, Portable DVD Player in about 2 years. For some reason they have all either just stopped spinning or rufuse to power up at all (the last two). I purchased all of them at Walmart, for around $150. While the screen is nice and has a great picture, I do not recommend it. It breaks way too easily- and for no aparent reason. Before you guys go thinking I'm a descruction machine- I've had the same ipod and blackberry (which I use everyday) for almost three years! Save yourself the frustration of having to fix something out of warranty. Just buy another brand!
screen works off and on.......2007-06-22
I bought this product in March. The battery pack is indeed strange and large. The screen has stopped working after 3.5 months. It didnt work last night but worked this morning. I contacted WorldWide distrubtors and was told to call phillips directly because they do not have any of this product left.
My irritations begin!

When you're feeling like relaxing at home, connect the CH-LDV 700B to your TV and Home Theater System - it functions just like a conventional home DVD Player, complete with Remote Control. Video and Audio cables are provided so you can quickly take advantange of the 707B's Progressive Scan Video and Digital Audio out.
Amazon.com Product Description
Watch your movies, listen to your MP3 CDs, view your digital photos, or review your camcorder footage--all from one portable device. The CyberHome CH-LDV 700B puts a world of entertainment at your fingertips, and it comes with everything you need to use it in the car or in home. Its built-in 7-inch widescreen LCD displays your favorite movies in their native aspect ratios and gives you the option to fill the screen with discs formatted in the standard 4:3 TV aspect ratio. The 480 x 234-pixel screen offers vivid images with its 300:1 contrast ratio and high, 500 cd/m2 brightness.
Choose to listen from the unit's built-in stereo speakers or its headphone jack and supplied earbud headphones. The unit's 2.5-hour battery life gives you enough juice to watch most full-length movies in a single sitting. Full format compatibility includes everything from NTSC and PAL-formatted DVD to audio CD, VCD, SVCD, CD-R, CD-RW, JPEG CD/Kodak Picture CD, MP3 CD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW. Taking the player on the road? Conserve batteries by plugging it into your vehicle's cigarette lighter with a supplied DC power adapter.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the CH-LDV 700B stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs when used in a home-theater environment. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
The player also performs 3:2 pulldown reversal through its progressive-scan output. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.
Other connection options include S-video and composite-video outputs (through the unit's single minijack video output, which is switchable as an input), and a switchable minijack analog audio input/output. A minijack optical digital-audio output lets you hook the player up with your audio/video receiver and multichannel speaker system to enjoy enveloping DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround from your discs. Progressive-scan, S-video, and optical digital-audio interconnects are not included with the player.
What's in the Box
DVD player, earbud headphones, AC adapter, automobile DC power adapter, remote control, remote battery, stereo analog-audio output cable, composite-video output cable, user's manual.

Stay away from this product.......2007-01-13
My Cyberhome portable DVD player worked for all of 1 day. It is unable to play DVDs or CDs of any type. Also, if you charge the battery according to manufacturer specs, it will completely drain out within 24 hours.
I attempted to get service from Cyberhome to no avail even though product is still under warranty. Their support number is unreachable as is their support email address. Attempts to locate the company via the web were unsuccessful.
This would have been a great product at a great price if only it had worked.
Purchase at you own risk. Check out the manufacturer web site. You have been warned.
Unreliable, No customer support.......2006-10-11
UPDATE 12/12/06
Cyberhome the company got out of the electronics business, particularly the cheap DVD player business a few months ago (and this is the reason why their site is not running anymore). You will not get any technical or warranty support for the unit if you purchase one. BUYER BEWARE!!!!
REVIEW 10/10/06
The player is relatively cheap compared to the branded ones. Works as advertised if you are lucky enough to have a "working unit".
I bought 2, one each for my two kids. One started to act weird after only a few days of use. The screen would "TURN BLACK" but you would still hear the sound playing. Initially, I thought it was my son who accidentally adjusted the brightness setting or any screen settings for that matter. I spent a good hour or two going through the other working unit and entering the same factory defaults on the other one to no avail. As a last resort, I removed the battery from the unit and placed it back in. That fixed the "BLACK SCREEN" problem temporarily because it would later come back when pressing one of the buttons of the unnit and at the same time tilting the screen (intermitent). So you have to remove the battery all over again to make it work.
If you are stuck with the unit, I would suggest not to move it around when watching a movie. The problem is actually documented on the manufacturer's web site (not accessible for the past 2-3 weeks that I checked) and the ONLY recommened fix is the same as I what I have described above.
Now my other working unit was fine. WAS in the the sense that the middle pin that plugs into the AC adaptor broke off for some reason. Wanted to get an RMA or something but it would be a miracle to try and get cutomer support from the manufacturer. I can't find any contact information at the web site at all. No phone numbers, no emails, nothing.
I'll try to get one from the retailer instead. So if I were you, look for another brand and don't get stuck with a lemon.
BUYER BEWARE! STOP and read before you buy!.......2006-08-17
We bought two cyberhome DVD players for our children to watch movies for our 8 hour drive to see family. My son's broke within days, the screen went black. Not because the battery pack was drained because it was plugged into the car. Returned that one a got another one. Again, the screen went black. Cyberhome was of NO USE at all. Finally got one that worked for more than 2 movies and my daughters broke. Not dealing with this company or product anymore, refuse to give them anymore of our money. We will purchase a Sony or other name brand BUT will definitly check customer comments before buying.
Not the greatest, but it does the job.......2005-11-06
We bought this little portable widescreen DVD player with only one purpose: helping keep our son entertained during the long plane trip abroad and back that was ahead of us in our last vacation. Granted that the 2.5 hours the battery lasts will make this more of a "last resource" rather than something you will want to use all through a flight (also, you may want to reconsider your parenting skills if you were thinking of doing that, anyway!) this portable unit works just fine.
The only "trick" we found it had was the way it got charged. You cannot charge it while a movie plays: it needs to be completely off (meaning with the screen shut AND turned off). Other than that, while not the most robust piece of electronics in our house, we're satisfied with the job it's done (so far). Would I recommend it? Well, just consider the price: if you are shopping around and you are shooting for the $150 range, at the time of this writing, this player is about the best thing you can get.
Would and HAVE recommended to friends.......2005-08-06
I have had my player for over a year and LOVE it. I use it while commuting on the bus to work, on planes, in the car for my daughter and have even used it at friends houses that don't have DVD players. It has a great screen. The other (and usually more expensive) players would have a faded look to the screen if you looked at it from the side, this one doesn't fade away, so my daughter and I can both see it no matter which angle we are looking from! I will admit, there have been times that I wish I could make the volume go up more, but overall I love this item. I have dropped it twice (quite hard by the way) and it still works. I will admit that when I purchased my first one, they gave me a dud, so maybe not all of them are perfect. But hang in there, just get it replaced or fix it if you are having problems. This is the best item and didn't cost a gazillion dollars.

The player handles DVD-Video as well as standard and recordable audio CDs, MP3- and JPEG-encoded discs, and Kodak Picture CDs, which offer greater digital-photo viewing flexibility.
Its slender, 1-inch chassis houses a 7-inch widescreen (16:9) TFT liquid-crystal display and a high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery. A remote control simplifies operation, and you can also navigate through discs using the top-panel controls, so you're not tied to the remote.
Audio features also include Dolby Digital passthrough and built-in stereo speakers for headphones-free listening. Alternatively, you can plug in the supplied headphone "Y" adapter and two sets of headphones for viewing with a companion. This handy configuration also spares whoever's up front from having to listen to blaring audio from a kids' movie in the back seat.

Great portable DVD player.......2007-11-30
This portable DVD player has been great for both travel (car) & home use and we've used it for almost 3 years. Both adults & kids have used it heavily & the only thing that has broken is the splitter for the headphones. Easy to use.
No Picture After a Few Uses.......2007-09-05
The dvd player was used less than 10 times then it stopped showing picture while the sound is still good. I'll just have to get another DVD of different brand. This one obviously does not last. Will avoid buying Mintek again in the future.
Customer Service Attrocious.......2007-04-22
We purchased a Mintek MDP1770 portable DVD player for our daugther a little less than two years ago. The product worked okay for a while, but then we had a problem where the unit wouldn't power up whether we were using AC power or battery. We tried contacting the Mintek customer service number several times. Each time we called during business hours and instead of getting a person we were directed to leave a message in the mail box. Twice when we tried doing this, we got a message that the mailbox was full. Finally on another try we left our contact information and a description of the problem and have never heard back from anyone at Mintek. I would strongly advise against purchasing a product from a company that provides this type of shoddy customer support. I can see from some of the other posts in this forum that I am not the only one to share this viewpoint.
Horrible Customer Service.......2007-04-18
This was given to me as a gift. The owner's manual and rechargeable battery pack were missing. The case was the wrong size and the DVD player did not fit. All I wanted to do was exchange the kit for one that was complete. When all the 3 different stores told me they were out of stock and did not know when more were coming in, I wrote the company hoping to get the problem fixed. I never recieved a response and will never buy a MINTEK item again.

BEWARE of Mintek!!!.......2007-02-09
I had a different Mintek before this one and it worked great for my daughters. It finally quit working, so we got this one for Christmas. It stopped working after two weeks of use. To late to return it to the place we bought it, so we had to return it to Mintek Digital. I returned it on 1/16/06. I didn't hear anything from them so I called, gave them the tracking # etc. They said they would get back to me... Guess what, I have yet to speak with another human from Mintek Digital. I call at least two times a day to leave a brief description of what I'm calling about, along with my name and phone #'s. I also email them a couple times a day to no avail. I finally today contacted the BBB, and filed a complaint with them.
I guess it goes to say. It's worth a few extra bucks to get good customer service. Oh well Live and Learn! But STAY AWAY from MINTEK.
So far not bad..........2006-12-19
I received this dvd player as a gift yesterday. It's very conveniently compact and fit nicely in my purse. The unit didn't come with an owner's manual, just one sheet of information about the battery. It comes with a Lithium Ion rechargeable removable battery which, after fully charged, turns itself off (there is an indicator light). I happened to be taking a somewhat long train ride and tested it out... I got about 3 hrs of movie time before the low battery signal started flashing. I shut it off immediately because I didn't want to see what would happen if I totally drained it. The picture is decent and the sound is pretty good through headphones - not so great on its own. During my viewing the picture got stuck for about 5 seconds, the machine started making a weird noise, and then started again about 4 scenes ahead of where I had been.
It comes with a remote control - nice and slim, but honestly, not sure why I would need it since it's a 7" screen and I'm obviously very close to the screen so I can see it - meaning the controls on the unit itself are within reach.
All in all, for a first try, not bad. I'm crossing my fingers that it holds up for a long time and that my friend who bought it for me got a good deal with this one.
