This exciting new addition to the EOS System combines compact size and affordability with an added dose of features and sophistication. Improving on the previous model, Speedlite 420EX, the new 430EX can now be set into manual flash mode (full power~1/64). Flash compensation can be set on the flash unit, and manual control of the flash zoom head is now possible. Canon 430E Flash.......2007-12-30
I had this flash on my wishlist for almost a year!!! I was so happy when I finally received it and couldn't wait to begin using it. I love this flash, I love how the top of the flash can be turned in different directions to obtain the results you want. Since I started using this flash my pictures are definately much better, It is fairly easy to use, I am still learning how to use it. But it is worth getting this flash for your Canon or other camera....
TTL Flash.......2007-12-28
I have a Canon EOS 40D and wanted a flash that would be totally controled by my camera. This unit does what I wanted. However, if you want the same features plus a "master" control to slave units you must get the 580. The 430 can be used as a "slave" but not a "master".
What a world of difference this flash makes!.......2007-12-23
The Canon Speedlite 430ex has made a huge difference to my photography. Prior to this flash, I had to shoot in-home pictures without flash (because the built-in gives an unnatural look) at ISO1600, f2.8, and 1/15s. The high ISO was noisier, the 1/15s was impossible to handhold or avoid subject movement. With this flash, I am able to shoot at ISO200, f2.8, 1/60 seconds, i.e. 5 f-stops lower.
Bounce capability is a must for any flash, and this flash can swivel 180% and bounce 90%. By bouncing it off the back wall (flash is pointing to the wall behind you), you can create a nice diffused light. Since it swivels in one direction, it takes a bit of sorting out when changing from portrait to landscape.
The E-TTL flash metering in 430ex is amazing. It sets the exposure accurately all the time. I often use it as a fill flash. Even if there is slightly less ambient light, I use the flash to fill-in some more light, and pictures still come out natural (no shine on chin, nose, foreheard, etc.). You can adjust flash compensation on the flash or the camera body (I use C-fn1-2 on Rebel Xti to program the SET button to modify flash compensation).
The guide number of this flash is 43 meters at 105mm focal length. It is very powerful for my needs. The flash has a powerful AF assist beam (only in One-shot and AI Focus AF modes), which can focus in near darkness without any ambient light. It is not possible to turn on the AF beam but turn off the flash. Flash does not zoom in bounce position. 430ex supports high speed sync which allows the flash to sync at higher shutter speeds. The LCD screen gives the flash a nice user interface. During DOF preview, the flash lights up with a crackling sound and charges up quickly for the shot. The flash is light and mid-sized.
When comparing the 430ex to the 580ex, the latter is the flagship flash in Canon's lineup and clearly better than the 430ex. But for most people reading this review, 430ex may be just right for your needs, and you get a lighter camera and heavier wallet. Another way to look at it is, should you outgrow the 430ex, you can use it as a slave to your new 580ex.
All in all, 430ex is an excellent flash.

Take your Canon Rebel XTi camera or photography to a new level with the this flash. You can get nautral looking shots by bouncing or ? the flash.
Once you use an external flash you'll never want to use the built-in flash again. It works well in auto mode but gives you full manual control if you want it. The flash is powerful and recylces quickly. Definitely, definitely worth it.

What can I say? After finally giving up on my old Promatic, I decided to bite the bullet on a Canon 430EX for my XT. This is simply a tremendously well-made, versatile, and fully-featured flash for the Canon line.
I believe that for the person looking for a single flash, the 430EX hits the "sweet spot" between the upper & lower ends of Canon Flashes, offering the range of features at a more reasonable cost. As your needs grow, it can be relegated to slave duty quite handily.
As with all Canon products, you'll pay the price for the label, but you're also getting quality equipment that will give you years of trouble-free operation, and something specifically designed to work with your Canon SLR to get the greatest mating of flash and camera.
Couple this with a decent diffuser (I have a LightSphere II, and love it!) and you won't need any more lighting assistance for a long time!

The powerful Phoenix DZBIS-112CII AF Flash allows you to take flash pictures at a greater flash distance than your camera's built-in flash. With your standard zoom, the built-in flash is usually effective to only about 13 feet, and that's when your zoom lens is set to its widest-angle setting. When you want to zoom in on the action, you'll find that the built-in flash does exactly the opposite of what you want. Its range is reduced to about 10 feet, and sometimes even less! It is even more annoying if you have a 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens. What is the sense of having the magnifying capability of 300mm but your cameras flash is only effective to about 10 feet? When you want to use your zooms telephoto capability indoors, requiring the built-in flash, your pictures come out dark, or even worse, not at all! Compared to your built-in flash, the zoom head of the Phoenix DZBIS-112CII (set at the tele position), allows you to shoot up to 3X further away with improved color, more natural lighting, and added depth to your pictures. In addition to pure power, this Phoenix flash provides better looking photographs. It reduces or totally eliminates the annoying "red-eye" effect. Even when using the red-eye reduction feature of your camera (necessary because the built-in flash is too close to the lens) the flash reflects off your subject's retina directly back into the lens and often results in pictures with "red-eye". Didn't work correctly with my Rebel XTI.......2007-07-07
The flash was very big and bulky. The flash never did sync right with the camera. Even after I messed with the ISO settings on the camera. To me the flash was a little more than you got with the camera. It might be ok if you are doing very little flash work. When I received it I imediantly opened it up to take pictures and was very dissapointed by the lack of quality and the fact that it did not correctly sync with the camera. I had a canon flash but it broke and I did not want to spend the money on another one so I tried this one instead but I learned one thing "you get what you pay for"...

I've tried this on every setting my Rebel XT digital SLR has and it always gets a well exposed picture with good white balance. You do have to set the ISO on the flash which some flashes do for you. Considering the price and the versatility of the flash, I certainly would consider it over the Canon version. It is, as described, tall and a little bulky in size but that raises the flash height which is one of its selling points.

Not what I expected........2007-05-15
I got this package on time, and in good shape. The price was alittle to good too be true. And it was. The Flash is what I payed for, cheaply made, but, it works good. The problem showed up when I installed the Hot Cable to My XTi inorder to extend My Flash. The Cable mounting clip got stuck in the Hot Connect on the Camera. The Maker of this part made this plastic slid too thick for the guide on the cameras hot connect. I was able to get it out of the mount,but, I had to have a Camera Guy do it. He said it was just cheaply made. Now I need to find a better made Hot Cable.

It is what it is!.......2007-11-28
You get what you pay for. All of the items work but for me the TTL Flash cord is the most cheaply made item in the package. I had to add rubber washers to the flash connecting end to keep it from spinning while the flash is connected. It now works fine. I also had to send back all the batteries and the charger because they did not work. They were also returned promptly. Overall, still worth it for the money.
